Comics are such great time capsules and they often offer more insights than actual history texts. To prove my assertion, here is a rib-tickling little Elvis Presley spoof from Four Color #1152 (Dec-Feb 1961) starring none other than Rocky & Bullwinkle. Read it and you will have a very good idea of how many people viewed The King at this moment in time, a mere fad, style over substance. Interestingly, this story is tentatively credited to Al Kilgore, an artist who, in 1983, won a National Cartoonist Society "Special Features Award" for his Elvis The Paper Doll Book. Mercy.
