Silly Sidney

The news has seemed extra grim the past week or so I think it's time for some good old-fashioned comic book escapism. Let's take a peek into the four color world of our favorite lisping elephant Silly Sidney. This was the first comic book story featuring Sidney, and it appeared in New Terrytoons #1 (1960, Dell). Sidney never rose to the heights of Terrytoons' major stars like Mighty Mouse or Heckle & Jeckle, but his second animated short, Sidney's Family Tree, actually earned an Oscar nomination in 1958, one of only two Terrytoons to do so.
By the way, where are those Terrytoon dvds I've been waiting for all my life?

I remember a Silly Sidney cartoon from the '60s, kinda filler piece that was shown in one of the package Saturday morning shows in the '70s.

Would that have been a one-shot or were a whole series produced?

Cheers!

Did Thidney...sorry...Sidney lisp in the cartoons? I don't recall that he did. Actually, the Sidney cartoons remain sort of a hazy memory for me; the only character in those things that I remember was the lion who sounded like Ned Sparks.

To answer Steven's question, yes, there were a series of Sidney cartoons. They ran like tap water on Kartoon Karnival, a local TV program from my youth, along with Hashimoto and Hector Heathcoate.

The Sidney cartoons were actually packaged as part of the Hector Heathcoate Show which also include Hashimoto San. I have a record album which has audio stories from each of the cartoons and listening to it brought back a lot of childhood memories.
For the interested, MTV was thinking of doing new Terrytoons at one time and actually commisioned a test reel which is available on youtube for your perusal: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRG01Pj8RSU
